In scientific research and experimentation, a hot plate is an instrument that gets used often. It usually has a level heating surface which can be set to certain temperatures and is commonly composed of metals such as ceramics or metals. Different types of laboratory hot plates exist; some have one while others have more than one heating zone and may also include magnetic stirring functions. Hot plate chemistry is the process of controlled heating of substances on a hot plate.
In organic synthesis, chemists use hot plate chemistry for refluxing, distilling or heating under reflux among other reactions. This helps in controlling reaction temperatures so as to achieve complicated organic compound synthesis. Innovations have been made like new catalysts development, modification of reaction conditions and methodologies that simplify organic syntheses.
Hot plate chemistry is important in material science when preparing and modifying materials. For example, spin coating is a technique where solution is spread over a substrate then spun at high speeds leading to thin films which are even thickness across it surface; most of times during this process solvent are evaporated through the use of hot plates thus annealing the resultant films.Inventions here includes fabrication thin films used electronics ,photovoltaics among others with better properties coatings.
In biological and biochemical researches we use hot plate chemistry for different things like enzyme assays, DNA/RNA hybridization or protein denaturation etcetera; some other innovations are such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) which was developed depending on heating cooling cycles controlled amplification DNA sequences enabling many genetics applications forensics molecular biology.
Hotplate Chemistry forms an integral part of drug synthesis, pharmaceutical research and development as well formulation analysis. It involves processes like solvent evaporation crystallization or dissolution testing ; this area has also seen some improvements such as new drug delivery systems formulation technologies analytical methods meant to enhance drug efficacy safety bioavailability.
The environmental analysis field utilizes hotplate chemistry during sample preparation for pollutants/contaminants/natural substances determination.Typically extraction digestion evaporation using solvents is done using these hotplates; there have been discoveries where by sensitive/selective analytical methods were developed for detecting/quantifying different compounds in environmental samples thus aiding risk assessment environmental monitoring
