Effective Home Remedies for Bacterial Conjunctivitis

Bacterial conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye is an ocular infection that results from bacterial presence such as Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus. However, while medical treatment is usually needed for bacterial conjunctivitis there are some remedies you can do at home to help relieve symptoms and support healing. Nevertheless, it’s important to consult a professional healthcare provider when the condition gets advanced or becomes persistent.

Here are few effective home remedies for bacterial conjunctivitis:

Warming Compresses

To relieve discomforts and reduce inflammation over infected eyes; apply a hot compress by dipping a neat piece of cloth in warm water (not too hot) gently closing your eyes for 5-10 minutes. Repeat several times daily.

Cleanliness and Hygiene

Maintain good hygiene practices in order to avoid spreading bacteria around. Do not touch or rub your eyes before washing your hands with soap and water thoroughly first.

Saline Eye Rinse

Wash out irritants plus germs from your eyes through rinsing them with saline solution which can be bought over-the-counter or made at home by dissolving one teaspoon salt in one cup distilled water then use clean dropper to put in few drops into each eye.

Cold tea bags soaked in cold water will reduce any swelling plus soothe the irritated eyes: steep two tea bags within hot water for some minutes then remove them placing into refrigerator after cooling down which should be placed on top of closed eyelids up to 10-15 minutes if cold enough,

Aloe Vera Gel

It is soothing and anti-inflammatory which can be used to calm down redness and irritation by applying some pure aloe vera gel using clean cotton ball around your eye without contact with eyes.

Probiotics

They can also be taken as supplements or eaten through such probiotic-rich foods like yogurt. The body’s immune system will thus get boosted thereby enhancing faster healing from bacterial infection.

Avoid Irritants

In order to avoid irritating your eyes, you should stay away from using make-up or wearing contact lenses until the infection is gone; moreover, do not go swimming in pools or hot tubs because bacteria contained inside could aggravate the problem.

Resting and Hydrating

Take enough rest and drink plenty fluids to support healing process of your body naturally and maintain good health generally.
