As we all know there is millions tiny life. Survive around ourselves and from the start of our morning until we go through our bed in the night, we all face attack of millions of these minute bacteria,a number of them are helpful for us and a few of them are very infectious and may be caused deadly infection with no proper medical treatment. Among these bacteria, one of the most common is E.coli that is harm full and causes few colitis infections.
The researcher from the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore, developed a type of antimicrobial material that can kill a bacterium E.coli within 30 seconds.
The concern research work has recently appeared in peer-reviewed journal, Small.
"The global threat of drug-resistant bacteria have given rise to the urgent need for new materials that can kill and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. Our new antimicrobial material could be used in consumer and personal-care products to support good personal hygiene practices and prevent the spread of infectious diseases," said the IBN Executive Director, Professor Jackie Y. Ying.
The team of a researcher,headed by Dr Yugen Zhang synthesized compound named imidazolium oligomers able to kill 99.7% of E.coli bacteria within 30 seconds.
"Our unique material can kill bacteria rapidly and inhibit the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Computational chemistry studies supported our experimental findings that the chain-like compound works by attacking the cell membrane. This material is also safe for use because it carries a positive charge that targets the more negatively charged bacteria, without destroying red blood cells," said Dr Zhang.
The imidazolium oligomers available in white powder and soluble in water.
