Pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) are a special kind of stem cell that can develop into any other form of cell in the body. Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are the two most common forms of PSCs (iPSCs). Specialized culture media is necessary for PSC maintenance and expansion in vitro.

Here are some commonly used PSC culture media:

  1. mTeSR1 is a culture medium for human embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells that does not contain serum or feeder cells and is frequently used. PSC development and pluripotency are both supported by the growth factors, nutrients, and tiny molecules that are included in it.
  2. E8: Another serum-free and feeder-free culture medium, E8 is a simpler formulation than mTeSR1, including only eight different components rather than twelve. It has been demonstrated to be beneficial to human embryonic stem cell (ESC) as well as induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) development and pluripotency.
  3. Media that are based on Knockout Serum Replacement (KSR): KSR is an alternative to serum that has been found to boost the proliferation and pluripotency of PSCs. There are various other formulations of media that are based on KSR, such as mTeSR1 and Essential 8 Flex.
  4. StemPro: is a culture medium that has been used to cultivate embryonic stem cells (ESCs) from both mice and humans. This medium contains serum. It supports both the proliferation and pluripotency of PSCs thanks to its content of Foetal Bovine Serum (FBS) and other growth factors.
  5. N2B27: This culture media does not contain serum or feeder cells and is used to keep mouse embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells PSC development and pluripotency are both supported by the product’s composition, which includes a variety of growth factors, insulin, and other nutrients.

The choice of culture medium is determined by a number of factors, including the type of pluripotent stem cell (PSC) that is being cultured, the stage of culture, and the particular experimental goals.
