Stem cells are type of undifferentiated cells capable of giving rise to indefinitely more cells of the same type, and from which certain other kinds of cell arise by differentiation. Researcher from Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) find success over successful transplantation of stem cells to improved vision in patient.
The concern research is recently presented at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) this week in Seattle, Wash. Under experiment researcher collected small piece of skin cells from patients body and modified it to induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC).Then these iPSCs were transplanted into eye cells, which were transplanted into the patient's eye. The transplanted cells survived without any adverse events for over a year and resulted in slightly improved vision.
Title of abstract is: Transplantation of Autologous induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Retinal Pigment Epithelium Cell Sheets for Exudative Age Related Macular Degeneration: A Pilot Clinical Study
