Mario Molina, a Mexican chemist, would have turned 80 years old today, and Google has honoured him with a birthday doodle. Mario Molina was a Mexican chemist who worked in his country. He was a co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995 for his role in discovering the threat to the Earth’s ozone layer from Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) gases, for which he played a pivotal role in the discovery of the Antarctic ozone hole. He also played a pivotal role in the discovery of the Antarctic ozone hole. He was the third Mexican-born individual to win a Nobel Prize and the first Mexican-born scientist to win a Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He was also the third Mexican-born person to win a Nobel Prize overall.

Molina received his Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City in 1965. He then went on to earn his Master of Science degree in Chemical engineering from the University of Freiburg in West Germany in 1967. After that, he went back to his alma mater to work as an associate professor (1967–68). He went on to earn his doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley in 1972, after which he spent one year working there before joining Rowland at the University of California, Irvine. He continued his education in the United States. After conducting research on contaminants in the atmosphere, the two individuals came to the conclusion that CFC gases ascend into the stratosphere, where Ultraviolet radiation breaks them down into their component constituents of chlorine, fluorine, and carbon. At that location, each chlorine atom has the potential to eliminate around 100,000 molecules of ozone before becoming inactive.
