The recent rabies death of an 11 year old Canadian boy sleeping with a bat on his face has revived an international alert of the dangers of bat exposure. Although he did not have a visible injury, rabies was transmitted.
This particular case was unusual, as the family did not think he was sick, as he did not have an injury. He began to have tingling, and then advanced to vomiting and rapid mental decline.
He was infected with rabies and died. The disease is almost always fatal once the symptoms of rabies have been established. Because he came in direct contact with a bat, the family should have considered it a rabies exposure and gone to the hospital.
Distant exposure to rabies is considered a much lesser risk than direct exposure, as rabies is so commonly fatal once a person is showing symptoms. This alert is for anyone who comes in contact with a bat. This case is a reminder of the need for rabies education and especially prevention focused during the times of year when inter-human bat contact is most prevalent. Reporting and prevention of rabies at the first sign is the best medicine.
