The epidemic of hantavirus infections on board MV Hondius and subsequent deaths of three confirmed passengers has prompted numerous suspected cases and stimulated a global health emergency as well as concerns about the control of infectious diseases with particular reference to the current outbreak in a closed environment.

What Happened?

The cruise was on a roundtrip voyage to include Antarctica and the Falkland Islands.

This has been verified from health organizations and the WHO:

  1. Three passengers died, all of whom were an elderly European couple.
  2. At least 6 – 7 cases were reported and 1 was in critical condition.
  3. As the ship was unable to dock in Cabo Verde, containment was enforced on board.
  4. Medical evacuations and services were coordinated internationally.

There is a concern that the infection may have started pre-boarding, possibly involving wildlife land excursions in the early stages. Although, all of this is yet to be fully confirmed.

This could easily be the result of simple:

  1. Direct exposure to rodent urine, feces, or saliva.
  2. Acute inhalation exposure to these viruses in the environment.

Some strains, such as the Andes virus, are thought to have a very small and limited potential for human-to-human transmission, among other current general concerns in relation to this outbreak.

Quick diagnosis and  brief support of care ensures an improved outcome.

Why this matters

This specific case covering the March 2022 Honduras specific case covers key global health and the pharmaceutical and diagnostics specific case:

Cruise ships being high risk environments cause rapid outbreaks

  1. Amoebisma being the nemonic condition worsens providing an outbreak
  2. As seen from the emerging zoonotic diseases predictable
  3. High -tech rapid infection control protocols supports care are needed
