Kamala Sohonie, an Indian biochemist, is being honoured with today’s Google Doodle. She holds the distinction of becoming the first Indian woman to earn a doctorate in a scientific field, so paving the way for other women to seek degrees in STEM fields.
Kamala Sohonie was an Indian biochemist who was the first Indian woman to acquire a doctoral degree in a scientific field. She was born on June 18, 1912, and passed away on June 28, 1998. Her presence at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, as well as the work she did there, cleared the path for women to be admitted to the institute for the very first time in its long and illustrious history.
Her research investigated the impact of several vitamins as well as the nutritional content of paddy, pulses, and other food groups that are consumed by some of the most impoverished segments of the Indian population. Her work on the nutritional benefits of the palm extract known as “Neera” was prompted by a suggestion made by the President of India at the time, Rajendra Prasad. The Rashtrapati Award was given to Kamala Sohonie for her contribution on this project.
