Proper handling of reagents is crucial for obtaining correct biological test results that are both timely and clinically relevant. It is also one of the important factors along with appropriate use of tests in maximizing the cost-effectiveness and relevance of testing in the field of molecular biology. Focus of this article is to review current changes in handling the temperature sensitive PCR reagents and macromolecules used in Molecular Biology or Clinical applications. Most of the reagents used in Molecular Biology are unstable if subjected to frequent freezing and thawing cycles. Hence in order to facilitate temperature stability during transportation in dry ice or liquid nitrogen, Screw Cap Vials are an ideal option.
Screw Cap Vials/Tubes are small bottles or containers made from either plastic, glass or silicone. As with most things, it can seem as if there are infinite varieties of vials. We usually categorize vials based on what they are used for. So, if we look for Liquid samples and high cost reagents, we prefer to go with Screw Cap Tubes. It may be shaped like a bottle or tube and have a conical bottom, flat bottom or self-standing, unlike common collection tubes for blood sampling.
For Life Science industry, we have to consider a variety of factors when thinking about the materials of vial, for storage purpose, durability and chemical inertness. Also, we need to think about application whether we are planning to use the vial with an automated sampler machine or place it in storage or for transportation purposes, and choose a cap accordingly. Additionally, make sure the cap material is also inert and have the same expansion coefficient for high melting & boiling points.
Polypropylene Screw Cap vials offers excellent resistance to alcohols, acids and bases, also it keeps a low risk of leaching.High Melting Point: Screw Cap vials (PP) can be used in autoclaves due to its ability to withstand high temperatures and maintain strength. It could also be used for Short term storage in vapor phase of liquid nitrogen.
Plastic is lightweight and easy to handle, therefore improves its efficiency in a busy laboratory environment. Likewise, it’s easier and potentially less expensive to ship or transport samples & reagents.
One of the greatest benefits of PP is about avoiding vial breakage and sample spillage if any individual drops them or bumps into a vial rack. This increases the safety of the lab and reduces the need to replace lost samples/ high cost reagents.
