Researcher from Veterans Affairs Research Communications shows an study over mouse resulting treatment of glaucoma by infusion of stem cells. The study may play lead role in treatment of glaucoma in future.
Glaucoma is a damage of optical nerve associated with a buildup of pressure inside the eye. "We believe that replacement of damaged or lost trabecular meshwork cells with healthy cells can lead to functional restoration following transplantation into glaucoma eyes," writes Kuehn on his lab's website. The concern research study recently appears in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. According to Glaucoma Research foundation about 120,000 Americans are suffering from Glaucoma and mainly African American s are at high risk of Glaucoma. Person with diabetes and those with family disease are also at high risk of Glaucoma.
In experiment researcher mainly encouraged to see that the stem cell injection led to a proliferation of new endogenous cells within the trabecular meshwork. According to Researcher their finding could help for better treatment of most common form of the disease named open angle glaucoma.
