In the Pharmaceutical industry, maintaining aseptic conditions is the topmost priority. And to maintain this aseptic environment, the Pharmaceutical industry performs Environmental Monitoring. Environmental monitoring includes air monitoring, surface monitoring, and personnel monitoring.
Air Monitoring can be done by passive sampling or active sampling. Passive air sampling will include exposure of the Culture Media Plate in open air for a few minutes, followed by incubation.
Active air sampling includes a Microbial Air Monitoring System which draws a measured volume of air through a microbial growth medium, usually agar plates—enabling the viable particle detection and quantification.

The preferred Culture Media for Pharmaceutical monitoring is Soya Casein Digest Medium (SCDM). SCDM is a general-purpose media mainly used for the isolation and culturing of fastidious or non-fastidious bacteria or sustaining their stock culture. It can be used to serve both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.
SCDM is one of the most widely used mediums for culturing because of its simple composition and great effectiveness. Basically, it is a combination of the pancreatic digest of casein and the papaic digest of soybean meal.

Along with Air, Surface, and Personnel, Water monitoring is also equally important in the Pharmaceutical industry, as water is widely used either as a raw material, as an ingredient, or as a final product. It is also used for rinsing equipment or for the preparation of disinfectants and detergents. In pharma industries, all water sources and treated water must be regularly monitored for microbial contamination. Presence of indicator microorganisms such as coliforms and E. coli are used to assess faecal contamination and overall water quality.
Heterotrophic plate count by pour plate or membrane filtration is the most common method for water testing. The European Pharmacopoeia recommended R2A Agar for the heterotrophic plate count of water samples. It is a nutritionally reduced media which helps in the recovery of stressed or sub-lethally damaged microbes.
