For quite a while now, the perception of the STEM field—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—has been associated to men only. However, that attitude is changing. Women worldwide have been and continue to make contributions in the various disciplines of research, technology, medicine, and engineering in the STEM fields. Women in the various disciplines of science have and continue to make significant contributions to global innovation and change.
Women have moved beyond just working in science to occupy positions of power and leadership in space science.
The Importance of Representation The difference that representation makes is profound. Women account for less than 30% of the world’s STEM workforce according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The upward shift of this number is possible due to the growing population of women scientist, engineers, and innovators.
The efforts they implement to promote the positive involvement of women in STEM and women-centered research builds a perspective for younger generations of girls to view their role in the domains of science, technology, and innovation as appreciated and worthwhile. Local icons in STEM such as Katherine Johnson, Marie Curie, and Kalpana Chawla as a role or career STEM icon indifferent to current cultural contexts exist as powerful motivators for younger girls. Such role models drive and energize younger girls in their pursuit of STEM fields and careers.
Bringing Change and New Ideas Along with being innovators, women make primary social and scientific contributions. Women manage projects that develop life-saving vaccines, lead efforts on climate change, and spearhead artificial intelligence and data science initiatives up to cutting-edge, world- changing challenges.
Women globally are pioneers in the fields of biotechnologies that aid in improving lives, technologies for clean water, and sustainable energy. Each of the biotechnologies that aid in improving lives and clean water technologies advances feminine energy technologies with the objective of providing and improving life.Walking Towards a Balanced Future Women continue to face systemic issues, primarily bias, in all stages of the research and inequity within the distribution of leadership, research roles, and in the balance between home and work.
There is also inequity with senior research roles, the gender pay gap, and inequity with access to research positions. In the field of science and technology, the case for value-complementing careers hinges on the continued provision of equitable access, inclusive environment policy, equitable, and inclusive access sponsorship, and mentoring and networking opportunities. Inspiring the Future Promoting the STEM ecology with balance and creativity compels the need to encourage girls in classrooms.
STEM activities encourage girls to be confident and curious.Women in STEM need positive and constructive action that is empowering and inclusive. This requires collaboration between teachers, policymakers, and parents to fully promote and nurture girls in STEM. Towards More Equal Innovation The Women in STEM story is one of change in the world’s attitude towards innovation and leadership.
The status quo is being challenged. The result is more diverse innovation and leadership. The stories of women in STEM continue to inspire countless aspiring thinkers and innovators. Disproportionate progress in STEM fields is a signal that progress towards equality is being made. Each contribution made by women in STEM is a new gain in equality and a new source of hope. Each contribution is a demonstration of the benefits of innovation when every individual is allowed to flourish.
