Germany | Germans enjoyed a mostly relaxed summer with several restrictions increased, the dividend of a quick response to the initial coronavirus outbreak and a dependence on early and widespread testing that won wide praise. It brought the amount of daily COVID-19 cases down from a peak of more than 6,000 in late March to the couple hundreds by the warmer months. However, as people grew lax in following the principles the numbers began to climb to almost quadruple the March daily record, and the nation currently finds itself in a new lockdown as it attempts to bring the pandemic back under control.

Will COVID-19 vaccines work on the new coronavirus version?
Experts believe so, but they are working to confirm that.

A coronavirus variant from the United Kingdom has caused alarm because of the chance that it might spread more easily. But even if that turns out to be true, experts say the COVID-19 vaccines being rolled out will likely still work on the variation.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the leading U.S. infectious disease specialist, said data coming from Britain suggests that the vaccines still will block the virus. However, the U.S. also will do tests to make sure.

Viruses often undergo small changes as they reproduce and continue through a population. In actuality, the small modifications are how scientists track the spread of a virus from one place to another.

But if a virus mutates significantly enough, one worry is that current vaccines might no longer offer as much protection. And although that”s a chance to watch for over time with the coronavirus, specialists say they don”t believe it will be true with the variant in the U.K.

“My expectation is, this won’t be a issue,” said Moncef Slaoui, the chief science adviser for the U.S. governments COVID-19 vaccine push.
